9/10/2023 0 Comments Adhd gifted kid burnout![]() ![]() It's only been recently (after doing loads of research, getting a diagnosis, and seeing a therapist) that I understand that it's sensory overload. Gifted kid burnout is because the schooling system is catered to the 80 majority, the bottom 10 and top 10 dont tend to do. As an adult, its very difficult for me to stay organized. After that, I just kinda dealt with feeling overstimulated and not understanding why. I have ADHD that went unnoticed until I was in high school, and I would have benefitted massively from learning these skills in elementary or middle school. I stopped going to college in my second semester because I was too overwhelmed with what should've been an easy class load for a "gifted" student. In my experience, its common to discover that a gifted child who seems lazy is actually twice-exceptional and has ADHD, a learning disability, or autism. I suddenly couldn't focus, I couldn't understand classwork and homework that had been so easy a year prior (it was the same work difficulty). ADHD burnout can be a lot of things and will look and feel different for each person, but there are some commonalities. I was extremely overwhelmed by loud areas and classrooms. Too often, these children get lost in an endless cycle of chasing diagnostic labels and are never given the tools to fully realize. Once I graduated high school in 2017 and went to my first year in college, everything changed. Twice exceptional kids are both gifted and diagnosed with a disabilityoften ADHD or an Autism Spectrum Disorderleading teachers and parents to overlook the child’s talents and focus solely on his weaknesses. ![]() I was simply able to ignore it or put in headphones and drown it out (I've always been introverted and didn't love loud environments but it never caused me to meltdown/panic/become overwhelmed). I never had problems in loud classrooms, lunchrooms, or any other environment where everything was loud. Another fun gifted kid burnout trait is being an anxious perfectionist. It wasn’t until grad school until I really had tools to maximize on my own learning strengths and create systems to support my challenges. or ADHD later in life issues they’ve struggled with since childhood but were masked by their temperament because. ADHD wasn’t really a thing people knew about until after I dropped out of my first college, but it was clear that I had a significant weakness in auditory processing that was minimally addressed. I had a 3.8-4.0 GPA through middle and high school. Like other types of burnout, gifted kid burnout (or gifted kid syndrome) is the result of long-term stress in this case, brought on by the unique pressures and experience of being considered gifted. I was considered the "gifted" daughter and never had a problem focusing or paying attention to schoolwork, lessons, or anything at all. I never thought I had ADHD even though it runs in my family, and my younger sister had obvious symptoms as a child (she's now 21 and diagnosed). ![]()
